A study found nearly 1.2million people sink the equivalent of one and a half bottles of wine a day.
The figures mean Britain is the worst in Europe for “very high risk” drinkers who are “chronically intoxicated” to the extent their organs are being poisoned.
Canadian researchers said boozing at such high levels could shorten drinkers’ lives by 20 to 30 years.
Dr Jurgen Rehm, of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto, said: “Public health seems to have overlooked people with very high drinking levels and seen them primarily as a small minority who should be helped clinically in the health care system.”
